Staff Development Day 2016

January 13th, 2016

Are we having fun yet?

More than 150 staff members of Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry convened on Jan. 6 for the dental school’s annual Staff Development Day. A theme was evident throughout the event: Providing genuine customer service and care for others — whether patients, students, faculty or co-workers — starts within.

A crucial component of workplace productivity, said guest speaker Tony Brigmon, is fun. Using an “energize-engage-enrich” format, this presentation explored challenges staff face, how to resolve them and how staff members can impact the future of their institution. Not surprisingly, Brigmon, who uses humorous stories and songs to relay his message, is the former “Ambassador of Fun” at Dallas-based Southwest Airlines, a company known for its exemplary service provided to more than 100 million customers each year.

TAMBCD staff members also explored the importance of customer service with Dr. Stephen Griffin, associate dean for clinical affairs, and had pressing questions answered by a panel of speakers, including:

  • Angela Hickman, clinic services manager, Office of Clinical Affairs;
  • Nita Munguia, clinical administration manager, Department of Restorative Sciences; and
  • Dale Lewis, clinical administration manager, Division of Professional Services.

To start the day, Dr. Lawrence Wolinsky, TAMBCD dean, shared key updates with staff during a welcome address.

The TAMBCD Resource Team coordinated the 2016 Staff Development Day. This organization is composed of staff members appointed from across the college to make positive changes in the areas of professional development, health and wellness, and camaraderie.
